Vertiv buys PurgeRite to own the liquid cooling “last mile” for AI data centers
Vertiv closed its roughly $1 billion acquisition of PurgeRite, a specialist in mechanical flushing, purging, and filtration for liquid-cooled data centers and other mission critical sites. PurgeRite’s services and tech will be integrated into Vertiv’s thermal portfolio to deliver end to end liquid cooling support from chillers down to rack level.
Analysis:
This is Vertiv betting hard that liquid cooling is now core infrastructure, not a niche add on. GPUs and dense AI racks are forcing operators into direct liquid cooling, and that shifts risk from “what CRAC unit do I buy” to “how clean and stable is my coolant loop over 10 years.”
PurgeRite lives exactly in that risk zone. They handle flushing, air removal, filtration, and chemistry management to keep loops clean and efficient from commissioning onward. That is what keeps delta T where it should be and avoids mysterious derates and leaks that kill GPU availability.
The tell here is PurgeRite’s existing relationships with hyperscalers and Tier 1 colo providers. Vertiv is not buying a science project. They are buying the operational muscle that already supports the world’s biggest AI estates, then wrapping it into a global service footprint.
For large enterprises and neoclouds, this means Vertiv can increasingly walk in and say “we own the full thermal chain for your AI halls.” From facility plant to CDUs to in row to at rack service. That simplifies vendor management, but it also deepens lock in around Vertiv architectures and service contracts.
On the energy and sustainability side, clean, well managed fluid loops are not just about uptime. Poor fluid quality degrades heat transfer, which drives higher pump power, higher chiller load, and worse PUE. As regulators and local communities start questioning AI data center energy and water use, operators will lean on these efficiency levers.
This also underscores a quiet reality: as we chase bigger GPUs and higher TDPs, the true constraints are moving downstream into pipes, valves, chemistry, and field service coordination. Vertiv is responding by owning more of that “plumbing layer” before someone else turns it into a competing platform.

Enterprise AI adoption and repatriation: As enterprises consider bringing AI workloads back on prem or into colocation due to cost, sovereignty, or control, they now face liquid cooling as a non optional requirement. A “one throat to choke” vendor that bundles design, hardware, and fluid services removes one of the biggest blockers.
Energy and water constraints: Efficient liquid cooling lets operators hit higher density per square foot, which is critical in power constrained or community sensitive areas. But those benefits evaporate if loops are dirty or unstable. Vertiv’s move acknowledges that operational discipline around fluid loops is part of the answer to NIMBY pressure on AI campuses.
