Grid constraints now limit data center plans more than GPUs

PJM’s independent market monitor is asking FERC to let PJM pause new data center interconnections across its 13-state footprint until there is enough generation and grid capacity to serve them without risking blackouts.

In Ohio, where hyperscale and AI data centers from Amazon, Google, Meta and others are driving projections of up to 15 GW of new demand against a 9.4 GW current peak, AEP has already imposed a moratorium and pushed through a controversial data center tariff now under court challenge.

For AI infra builders, the signal is clear: grid access, not just GPUs and capex, is becoming the gating factor, and this piece is worth a read to understand how regulatory risk could slow data center timelines.
